I am both a designer and an educator, and I am thrilled when I can make connections between those two worlds. What project are you most proud of and why? In addition to teaching lighting at Weber State, I also do sound design and projection design for theatre. I love to use light as a storytelling element on stage. I especially enjoy designing new plays, or working on collaboratively devised pieces. I design a wide range of performance projects in theatre, dance, opera, and site specific pieces in New York, Utah, and throughout the US. Tell us about your work – is there a specific type of project you like to work on or an area you specialise in and why? I’m a member of the United Scenic Artist union, Local USA 829. I have a BA in Theatre from Hampshire College and a MFA in Lighting Design from the University of Massachusetts. I realized that storytelling through light was how I wanted to contribute to the theatre. I felt like I had discovered a language I didn’t know I spoke. That first production was a steep learning curve- but it was clear, I was hooked. A friend of mine was producing a play he wrote and he needed some help with the lighting I had no experience but volunteered anyway. I had always been very involved in theatre, and I started college thinking I wanted to become an actor or director. I got my start in lighting design by way of performing. I grew up in New York state and have worked with various performing arts companies and schools throughout the US. My name is Jessica Greenberg, I’m a theatrical lighting designer and an Associate Professor of Theatre Design at Weber State University in Ogden, UT. Please contact with particular questions.Introduce yourself (name, company, position, country) and tell us how you got into lighting design (including education/qualifications). If selected to be a part of the Design Pool, you will meet with each of the artists in our cohort for a "speed interview." At the speed interview, designers are encouraged to show selections from their portfolio and artists will discuss the project to determine which designers will be offered a paid creative or technical position for the production. In addition, we are accepting applications from Directors, Dramaturgs, Choreographers and Stage Managers. We invite you to apply for lighting design, scenic design, costume design, projection design, & sound design. The design pool is intended to introduce talented designers and collaborators in our region to this season's artists. In addition, we introduce these artists to theatrical artists, designers, and technicians that can help them bring their visions to life. These artists receive a budget for their work, three performances at the New Hazlett Theater, access to rehearsal space, technicians, house equipment and front-of-house staff, and full documentation of the work. This year, we have selected five performing artists from many genres to create a new theatrical work on our stage. In the spirit of our mission to cultivate the arts, we have developed the Community Supported Art (CSA) Program. Our space is an incubator for performers and creators, and we’ve worked for the last 10 years to bring out the best in everyone who has walked through our doors. At the New Hazlett Theater, we don’t just make art – we make art happen.
